Picture a 5-year-old me, wide-eyed and eager to conquer the horse world! Little did I know that my journey with these majestic creatures would extend far beyond just riding.

 

My first horse, Jäger, was a $300 Craigslist purchase who arrived with a host of behavioral issues, the most alarming being his explosive bucking under saddle. His actions made me realize he was trying to communicate that something was wrong. Shortly after, he was diagnosed with a painful muscle condition called PSSM1. Jager prompted me to delve into species-appropriate nutrition and management, and to comprehend how and why horses express their discomfort.

 

After seven remarkable years together, he transitioned from this life, and I wholeheartedly believe he guided me to my current mare, Annie, before departing. It was Annie who pushed me to explore deeper and acknowledge that dismissing my instincts wasn't fair to her or the other horses I interacted with – they sensed it, and so did I. That's when I veered into the realm of positive reinforcement training.

 

Suddenly, I was immersed in learning theory, anatomy and biomechanics, equine ethograms, pain science, and equipment fit and mechanics. But this journey wasn't just about acquiring knowledge; it was a rediscovery. I reconnected with my intuitive side and reignited my ability for energetic healing.
